Canary Wharf Jubilee Line Station Brief

Completed in 1999, Canary Wharf Tube Station is the busiest in London serving over 40 million people a year. The Foster + Partners designed station is almost cathedral-like. The distinctive feature being a cavernous internal space, only visible from above ground by three glass enclaves to help bring in natural light. Working for the main contractor, Tarmac Construction O’Shea Plant Hire manufactured the molds for the fair-faced concrete ceiling.

The domed ceiling curves in. As a result it won 9 architecture awards in 1999 alone, and later won the Best Transport/Infrastructure Building In The World at The World Architecture Awards in 2001.
